Atami’s Hydro Rokz are actually not a very complex substrate. The clay balls are produced in a uniform frame size and contain nothing more than pure and salt-free clay. Due to the manufacturing method, the clay becomes solid and porous, which creates certain properties that offer an advantage for the different types of use.
If the Hydro Rokz are used in a substrate mixture with peat or other soil, for example, the porous structure in the soil serves as an air and water reservoir. The soil generally becomes richer in structure and roots can and must branch out even more. This more pronounced root formation also increases the plant’s absorption capacity and it grows stronger and produces more yields.
Another application of Hydro Rokz is drainage. The Rokz are then filled into the pot as a separate, pure layer under the actual substrate. This “stony” subsoil ensures that the plants do not stand in the water, which would result in a lack of oxygen or mold. With the help of the gaps between the Rokz, liquid can drain off easily and quickly and fresh air penetrates continuously from below to the bottom of the pot. This technique is often used when using fabric pots and/or pure coconut substrates.
Also well known is its use as a substrate substitute in hydroponic systems. Depending on the system, the properties of the Rokz are claimed differently. In small net pots, where nutrient solution is regularly passed through the pot, the porous structure serves as a water and air reservoir and the stones themselves give the roots and plant stem a light grip. If the Hydro Roks are sunk and stand in the water together with the roots, an air pump is often used. The stones then help to distribute the air as widely as possible in the water and are also there again as anchor points for roots and stems.
